Hunters Point work
What we actually get called for here
Not a generic list. These are the jobs this neighbourhood's buildings generate.
- Self-locking unit door lockouts in high-rise buildings
- Rekeying on move-in after a lease turnover
- Smart lock installation on building-standard doors
- Multipoint terrace and balcony door adjustment
- Mailbox and package-room lock replacement
Glass towers have a specific set of lock problems
Almost everything residential on Center Boulevard and Hunters Point South was built after 2005, and that shows up in the hardware. Multipoint locks on balcony and terrace doors, fob readers on lobby and amenity doors, self-locking unit doors, package rooms with their own credentials, and increasingly smart locks retrofitted by tenants onto building-standard doors.
The single most common callout down here is embarrassingly simple: a self-locking unit door pulled shut with the keys on the counter. Taking the trash to the chute, stepping out for a delivery, walking the dog to the park. The door does its job perfectly and you are standing in the hallway in a t-shirt.
Those are usually quick, non-destructive openings — modern building-standard cylinders are rarely a fight — but they need a locksmith who is genuinely nearby, because a lockout in a hallway on the twenty-eighth floor is not a two-hour-window problem.
Terrace and balcony doors, which are not ordinary doors
The sliding and swing doors onto Hunters Point terraces mostly run multipoint hardware — a single handle throw drives several locking points up and down the frame at once. They are excellent locks and they fail differently from a deadbolt.
What goes wrong is almost never the cylinder. It is the gearbox in the door edge, or the alignment: these doors take direct weather off the East River, the frames move, and the multipoint stops seating. You feel it as a handle that needs real force to lift.
Forcing it is how the gearbox breaks, and a replacement gearbox on a proprietary tower door is neither cheap nor quick to source. Getting it looked at while it is still merely stiff is a very different bill from getting it looked at after it has snapped.
Turnover, and the key history nobody tracks
Hunters Point has genuinely high tenant turnover — a lot of one and two-year leases, a lot of relocations. That means a lot of apartments where the key history is completely unknown by the time you move in.
Building management changing the lobby fob is not the same as your unit key being fresh. Those are separate systems, and the unit cylinder frequently carries over between tenancies untouched.
Rekeying a unit door is a small job — usually under twenty minutes and well under the cost of new hardware — and it is the one thing we recommend to every single person who tells us they have just moved into one of these buildings.
