The dealership is not your only option

Transponder keys, and why cutting alone does nothing

Nearly every car built since the late nineties has an immobiliser. There is a chip in the key head that has to answer a challenge from the car before the engine will start. A key cut to the right shape but not programmed will turn the ignition and do absolutely nothing else.

This is why a hardware-store key copy fails on a modern car and why the price is higher than a house key. You are paying for the programming session and the equipment, not for the metal.

Proximity and push-to-start systems add another layer, which is why smart keys sit at the top of the price range. They are still substantially cheaper done at the kerb than done at a dealer.

Make the spare now, not later

The cheapest car key you will ever buy is the second one, made while you still have the first. Cloning an existing working key is a fraction of the cost of originating a key from scratch when every copy is gone.

The difference is not small. Originating a key on a car with no working key can mean pulling codes from the vehicle, an extended programming session, and sometimes a module reset. Cloning a key you already have is a short job with a small bill.

I lost every key to my car. Can you still make one?
In most cases yes, and without a tow. Originating a key with no working key on hand takes longer than cloning an existing one — we pull the code from the vehicle and run a full programming session — but it happens at the kerb where the car is parked. A small number of very recent models do have to go through the dealer, and we will tell you that on the phone rather than after we arrive.
Why does a car key cost so much more than a house key?
Because the metal is the cheap part. Almost every car since the late 1990s has an immobiliser: a chip in the key that has to answer the car before the engine will start. You are paying for the programming equipment and the session, not for the blank. A key cut to the correct shape but not programmed will turn the ignition and nothing more.
What do you need from me before making a key?
Proof that the car is yours — registration or title — plus photo ID matching it. This is not bureaucracy for its own sake; verifying ownership is exactly what separates a licensed auto locksmith from someone stealing a car in daylight. Any locksmith who does not ask is one you should not use.
Can you program a fob I bought online?
Often, yes, and it can save you real money. The caveat is that cheap online fobs vary a lot in quality and some are the wrong chip type for the vehicle despite the listing. Send us the part number before you buy and we will tell you whether it will work.
My key broke off in the ignition. What now?
Do not turn it and do not try to pull it with pliers — both make the extraction harder and can damage the ignition cylinder itself. We extract broken keys from ignitions and door locks, and we can usually cut a fresh key from the remaining piece on the spot.
