High-security locks for LIC storefronts: what actually stops a break-in
Why the cylinder is the weak point on most LIC storefronts, what ANSI grades mean, and the exit-door fix that becomes a violation.

Walk the commercial blocks of Long Island City — Vernon Boulevard, Jackson Avenue, the industrial frontage up in Dutch Kills — and you will find the same pattern over and over: a serious door with an unserious lock in it.
The door is welded steel. The frame is solid. The hinges are secure. And the thing that opens it is a Grade 3 cylinder somebody fitted in a hurry a decade ago, for eighteen dollars.
That is spending on the wrong half of the problem, and it is the single most common security gap we see in commercial LIC.
An attack goes at the weakest point
Nobody attacks the strongest part of a door. They attack whatever gives first, and on a good steel door that is almost always the cylinder — because it is the one component that has to be openable by design.
A standard cylinder can be picked by someone competent in under a minute, drilled out in about two, or bumped open with a specially cut key and a tap. None of these leave much evidence, which matters enormously for an insurance claim: a break-in with no visible forced entry is a break-in your insurer may decline to treat as one.
What ANSI grades actually mean

The grade is about duty cycle as much as attack resistance. A shop door opened three hundred times a day is a fundamentally different machine from a house door opened four times, and residential-grade hardware on a retail door will fail — not because it is bad, but because it is the wrong tool.
What high-security cylinders actually add
High-security cylinders — Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Abloy and similar — are a different category from a better standard lock. They add three things:
- Pick resistance. Additional security pins and, on some designs, a second dimension of movement that picking tools cannot address at all.
- Drill resistance. Hardened steel inserts placed exactly where a drill would need to go.
- Key control. The blanks are patented and restricted, so a copy cannot be cut at a hardware store. Only an authorised dealer can cut one, and only against documented authorisation from the registered keyholder.
Key control is the part owners underrate and then wish they had. Every employee who has ever held a key to your storefront could have copied it in four minutes for two dollars. With a restricted profile they cannot, and you know exactly how many keys exist because every one of them was authorised by you.
The exit-door mistake
This one matters enough to state plainly. After a break-in, the instinct is to add security to every door — including the back exit. A deadbolt on the inside, or worse, a padlock and hasp.
In any space where the public gathers, an exit door must open from the inside without a key, without special knowledge, and in a single motion. A deadbolt that needs a key from the inside is both a code violation and a genuine life-safety hazard, and it is a violation that inspectors specifically look for.
There are compliant ways to secure an exit door — delayed-egress hardware, alarmed exit devices, proper night latches that release on a single push. They cost more than a padlock and they do not get your business cited or, in the worst case, someone hurt.
Rolling gates, and what winter does to them
For everything with a roll-down gate — most of Dutch Kills, much of the Vernon frontage — the lock lives outdoors in weather. Road salt gets thrown onto the gate all winter, works into the padlock shackle and the cylinder, and by February the lock either will not take the key or will not release once closed.
There is a run of these calls every year between January and March, and they are almost entirely preventable: a weather-rated padlock with a shielded shackle, and a proper lock lubricant rather than WD-40, which strips the existing lubrication and leaves the cylinder worse than it found it.
A sensible order of spending
- Upgrade the cylinder on your main entrance to a high-security, drill and pick-resistant unit with key control. Biggest return, because the expensive part — the door — is usually already right.
- Fix the exit doors so they are compliant and secure at the same time, rather than one or the other.
- Reinforce the strike plates. A three-inch screw into the stud instead of a three-quarter-inch screw into the jamb costs pennies and defeats most kick-ins.
- Sort the secondary doors — back entrances, basements, loading bays. These are the ones an intruder prefers precisely because they are out of sight of the street.
- Then consider access control, if staff turnover is your real problem rather than forced entry.
For most Long Island City storefronts, the first two items on that list close the majority of the actual risk, and neither one requires replacing a door.
